SUMMARY:August 2019 Meetup
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of fun\, great discussions and beer & pi
zza.\n\nWe'll start off with the food and the drinks at 6.30pm.\n\nTalk 1:
Software Engineering in 100 Years Time by Dave Farley\, Continuous Delive
ry Ltd\n\nIf we were to more clearly define our discipline what would that
look like? If “Software Engineering” is real “Engineering” then t
he principles should be long-lasting\, durable and probably unsurprising.\
n\nWhat sort of ideas will be as true of “Software Engineering” in 100
years time as they are today?\n\nWhat are the foundations on which we cou
ld begin to build a true Engineering discipline for our profession?\n\nThi
s talk explores some of those ideas and describes why Continuous Delivery
may be the best starting point that we have for that.\n\nDave Farley is a
thought-leader in the field of Continuous Delivery\, DevOps and Software D
evelopment in general.\nHe is co-author of the Jolt-award winning book 'Co
ntinuous Delivery' a regular conference speaker and blogger and one of the
authors of the Reactive Manifesto.\n\nDave has been having fun with compu
ters for over 30 years has worked on most types of software\, from firmwar
e\, through tinkering with operating systems and device drivers\, to writi
ng games\, and commercial applications of all shapes and sizes. He started
working in large scale distributed systems more than 25 years ago\, doing
research into the development of loose-coupled\, message-based systems -
a forerunner of MicroService architectures.\n\nDave has a wide range of ex
perience leading the development of complex software in teams\, both large
and small\, in the UK and USA. Dave was an early adopter of agile develop
ment techniques\, employing iterative development\, continuous integration
and significant levels of automated testing on commercial projects from t
he early 1990s.\n\nDave is the former Head of Software development at LMAX
Ltd\, home of the OSS Disruptor\, a company that are well known for the e
xcellence of their code and the exemplary nature of their development proc
ess.\n\nDave is now an independent software developer and consultant\, and
founder and director of Continuous Delivery Ltd.\n\nContact:\nTwitter: @d

continuous-delivery.co.uk\n\nTalk 2: Scar\, DevOps and Flow by James Lewis
\, Technical Director at Thoughtworks\n\nRecent research summarised in the
book Accelerate points to a set of practices that lead to high software d
evelopment organisation performance. Simultaneously\, research from the Sa
nta Fe institute on Complex Adaptive Systems over the last 20 years seems
to point to a grand unified theory of organisational design. So have we cr
acked it? Do we now have the answer to the question: how do we create and
scale high performing software and organisations? In his talk\, James expl
ores this research and takes a look at the surprising links between micros
 ervices\, elephants\, London and companies.\n\nMeetup Retro - An opportuni
ty to get feedback on what went well\, and what you'd like to see next tim
 e. Please visit the following retro board:\nhttp://bit.ly/LondonCD\n\nhttp
