SUMMARY:[CANCELLED] ...
DESCRIPTION:CANCELLED\n\nToday 3/6 about 4:15pm the City of Austin took the
decision to cancel South by Southwest in the face of the COVID-19 virus o
utbreak. They are about to declare a 7 day disaster window as well.\n\nFor
this reason we have taken our own decision to cancel this month's event.\
n\nWe sincerely hope we can get Instana back to Austin when conditions for
travel and gatherings have stablized.\n\nPlease stay tuned for April's an
nouncement.\n\nMost of all\, please do the basics and stay healthy.\n\nSin
cerely\nBoyd\, Laura and JJ\n\nCANCELLED\n\nInstana will be our food and b
everage sponsor for the evening.\n\nChanging The Game: Leveraging Game The
ory to Transform Your IT Organization\n===================================
===============================\n\nAs organizations begin the process of d
igitally transforming they will often struggle after initial efforts at au
tomation (the dreaded J-curve). In this 40 minute session we'll discuss wh
y the J-curve phenomenon occurs and define the concept behind the Pareto I
nefficient Nash Equilibrium through a game show called "Golden Balls". In
this entertaining segment we'll discuss how you can introduce this concept
to effectively change the game and push past the low-end of the J-curve.\
n\nThe journey doesn’t end there\, as organizations begin shipping chang
es more often\, introducing new features\, services\, and dependencies com
plexity begins to rise. This often results in teams forming centers of exc
ellence around reliability and availability. We will talk about how Site R
eliability Engineers enable organizations by accelerating into the upper e
nd of the J-curve through leveraging observability to effectively establis
h error budgets\, SLOs and SLIs. We’ll discuss how SRE teams can leverag
e distributed tracing aggregates\, system metrics\, and log analytics to e
ffectively measure “all the things” and the value this measurement bri
ngs to engineering teams through visibility\, communication\, and accounta
 bility.\n\nSlides: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lWgIVTlyyOyHturs04mU7P

r Instana\, a managed service provider that specializes in observability a
nd monitoring production systems\, as a Senior DevOps Advocate. He has tra
veled the globe speaking on topics including DevOps\, Docker\, Observabili
ty\, and Culture Transformation at conferences and such as DockerCon\, SRE
con\, Open Source Summit EU/US\, Velocity and DevOpsDays including Tokyo a
nd Houston. He is passionate about educating engineers about the benefits
of observability\, distributed tracing\, and control theory.\n\nIn additio
n to his work at Instana\, Kevin is the founder and core organizer for the
local Docker meetup in Nashville and was the lead organizer for DevOpsDay
s Nashville in 2019. He has been distinguished by his peers as a Docker Ca
ptain for his work both professionally and within the DevOps community. He
has been working in software development roles almost his entire career a
nd enjoys learning about how fellow peers are leveraging modern practices
and tooling.\n\nAt his previous jobs Kevin was responsible for designing a
nd building distributed scheduling systems utilizing Amazon SQS\, DynamoDB
\, Kinesis and Redshift. His most recent project he was responsible for a
modern software delivery platform using Go/Angular which was integrated wi
th Docker Swarm and Gitlab. This application is capable of delivering phoe
nix environments and a fully configurable production pipeline. This applic
ation manages the SDLC of over 1000 containers and dozens of engineers bui
 lding on a Kafka\, Cassandra\, and Spring Boot ecosystem.\n\nhttps://www.d
