SUMMARY:DevOps Exchange - May @ River Island
DESCRIPTION:London's DevOps Exchange in May will be hosted by the one of Br
itain’s most well known high street fashion brands – River Island on t
he 15th. The event will take place in the heart of Shoreditch\, with anoth
er 4 interesting and varied talks organised.\n\nWe have a tight limit this
month so RSVP early.. See you there!\n\nAgenda\n\n7pm Alessandro De Maria
@ Synthace\nIntroducing Kapitan into your startup: first 100 days at Synt
hace\n\nSynopsis: Introducing Kapitan into a real startup to simplify proc
esses and gain control over Kubernetes deployments.\n\nMy experience of jo
ining a fast-moving startup and initial strategy to gain control over depl
oyments.\n\nBio: Alessandro De Maria recently joined Synthace\, a London B
iotech company\, as Head of SRE. Prior to joining Synthace\, Alessandro wa
s Head of DevOps and Production Systems at DeepMind Health. Alessandro joi
ned DeepMind in 2013 before the Google acquisition\, and during the 6 year
s there he was able to contribute during several start-up / fast growing m
oments of the company\, including DeepMind Health which grew from 6 to 150
in 2 years. Whilst at DeepMind\, Alessandro and his team created the Open
Source project Kapitan\, which is used to manage complex configurations a
nd is especially suited for Kubernetes\n\n7:20pm: Peter Flood and David Ed
wards @ River Island\nDevOps transformation at River Island\, a product te
am perspective\n\nSynopsis: The journey of a fledgling project team into a
maturing value led product team embracing DevOps culture. This presentati
on will include some of the challenges faced and the technologies/processe
s used to overcome them.\n\nPeter Flood: Golang developer currently workin
g with River Island (contractor). I tend to work on highly-available distr
ibuted applications\, experienced at all levels of the stack including arc
hitecture.\n\nDavid Edwards: A retail technology expert with lots of exper
ience implementing successful high-quality solutions using quadrant leadin
g vendor and open source technologies covering most parts of a retailers e
 nterprise architecture.\n\n8pm: Daniela Petruzalek – GoCardless\nPac Man
from Scratch\n\nImagine that: a Pac Man clone written in Go that runs on
the terminal… with emojis! The purpose of this game is actually to provi
de a fun way to learn the Go programming language\, instead of the traditi
onal API and/or CRUD tutorials out there. While the game itself is very si
mple and the use of the terminal as a “screen” abstracts the need for
using graphical libraries\, we are still able to show some powerful featur
es like the use of goroutines and channels.\n\nBio: A Software Engineer at
GoCardless and a Google Developer Expert in Google Cloud. Daniela’s mai
n area of interest is backend programming\, but also likes to explore big
data and machine learning.\n\n8:20: Phil Thompson @ Bloomberg\nThe challen
ge for DevOps isn't Dev\, and it isn't Ops either\n\nThe content will be o
n leadership and systems thinking\, about how DevOps can be seen as a loca
l optimisation within a system\, and solely focusing there may actually wo
rsen the system as a whole.\n\nBio: A deep believer in people and that thi
ngs can be better than they are. Has worked with companies across many ind
ustries to improve their delivery of value by focusing on accepting and ad
apting to the complexities of their environments. Better is the goal\, and
won't be achieved through a focus on the adoption of any tool or process.
People will naturally make places better if permitted\, we just need to c
reate the environments where they are permitted and will thrive.\n\nIt loo
ks to be a great event and we're excited to see you all there!\n\nAll the
 best\,\nDoxlon team\n@doxlon\n\nSponsors\n\nLinuxRecruit (http://www.linux
recruit.co.uk/)\nLinuxRecruit introduce great people\, to equally great co
mpanies across Europe. Come and say hello to learn more!\n\nSHAPE (www.wes
hape.io/)\nShape are a Cloud\, DevOps and Agile consultancy with a differe
nce. Deploying squads\, delivering outcomes\, creating lasting value.\n\nh
