SUMMARY:DevOps Monthly Online: Policy as [versioned] Code - how to do day 2
DESCRIPTION:Agenda:\n• 5:00 PM - Check in and hang out\n• 5:05 PM - Lea
 n Coffee Chat/Presentation\n• 5:25 PM - Lean Coffee Chat/Q+A\n• 5:55 P
 M - Wrap up\, Next month\n• 6:00 PM - Post-event loitering in Gather: ht
 tps://replug.link/devopstosocial\n• 6:30 PM - Adios!\n\nIn this talk\, C
hris will trace back the origins of how policies are often incepted\, how
it can get out of hand\, be slow if not impossible to update and measure c
ompliance\, and often lead us to question of **is the policy helping or hi
ndering**. From this talk you’ll learn how to use a software development
pattern and product ways of thinking towards how your organization can ma
nage policy\; achieve continual updates to policy allowing the risk mitiga
tions to move as fast as the risk does\, not get in the way and be easy to
measure compliance.\n\nKey take aways: - Policy often causes more harm th
an good\, is slow to update\, exemptions are harder still to manage\, meas
uring compliance at scale is near on impossible. - Throwing some curly bra
ces at a problem is not the solution. Policy if it is articulated as code\
, needs to embrace all the best practices of code. - Purposeless policy is
potentially practically pointless. (now say it 5 times quickly)\n\n**Spea
ker:** Chris Nesbitt-Smith\n\nA developer at heart with a passion for test
ing\, while still active in the open source community. Chris has worked ex
tensively in critical national infrastructure where “matters of life or
death” is not just a flippant throwaway comment. Chris provides training
and consulting to many UK & US Government departments\, large multination
al private sector enterprises\, and large charities. Through all of this C
hris has seen a lot of organizational and technical disfunction (not all o
f his own making) and in inefficiencies\, and wants to join him in fixing
 them.\n\nJoin our Slack: https://vzbl.io/devopstoslack\nIf you'd lik
