SUMMARY:Here's your Pager\; GLHF
DESCRIPTION:Building on our great devopsdays discussions\, let's get togeth
er and talk about onboarding for being on call!\n\nTalk Description:\nAs a
manager of a team that has On-Call responsibilities\, I am personally acc
ountable for ensuring engineers are prepared to receive pages. As a system
s thinker\, I’ve broken this down into many different layered approaches
that leave room for adaptation in the face of new and emergent system beh
avior.\n\nOk\, great... what does that mean? Troubleshooting problems with
in a complex system requires enormous amounts of context-specific expertis
 e. It is next to impossible to provide adequate training to build that exp
ertise. That expertise is created over time and I’ve found that learning
on the job is the most effective way to build it.\n\nTreat On-Call as a t
eam sport\; give an engineer the freedom to learn and grow. If it’s a te
am sport you can still get the best possible response out of an incident\,
learning along the way. How you run your On-Call on-boarding has a signif
icant impact on creating this team sport mentality and affects team cultur
 e. If we build a team culture based on trust and learning\, we can do so m
uch better than “Good Luck Have Fun”.\n\nSpeaker: Andy Fleener\, Sport
sEngine\nAndy Fleener is a Humanist and a New View Safety Nerd who believe
s software is as much about the people building and running it as it is th
e people using it. He is a Platform Operations Manager at SportsEngine whe
re he’s been doing a mix of development and operations since 2011. Andy
enjoys music\, football\, sushi\, oxford commas\, and laughing at all the
things millennials are ruining.\n\nLocation:\nWe're at SportsEngine again
this time. To reach SportsEngine\, turn off Broadway onto Quincy Street an
d enter the parking lot on the right. You will see the Sports Engine entra
nce straight ahead. You can park in the lot.\n\nFood & drink will be serve
