SUMMARY:Kris Nova talks Falco & K8s @ Spotify
DESCRIPTION:Hello NYC Kubernauts!\n\nFor October\, we're grooving our way o
ver to a new space at the World Trade Center\; this month\, we'll visit Sp
otify's posh new office space on the 71st floor.\n\nWe're excited to welco
me Kris Nova to the group for the first time. She will demo how taking the
must fundamental component of a Linux system (syscall data) and bubbling
that up to an API driven application in Userland has given us powerful vis
ibility and control over the complexity of a Kubernetes cluster. We'll lea
rn about the eBPF protocol\, and how it enables us to safely and securely
parse this information. Furthermore\, we look at how we are able to parse
this data at runtime. You'll walk away understanding how these primitives
work\, and how tools like Falco empower us to have never before seen contr
ol over a Linux system.\n\nWe'll also dig into technical and financial eff
iciencies practices for K8s with Spotify SRE Danielle Zephyr Malament. Eff
icient container orchestration requires learning an entirely new paradigm
of resource management. Kubernetes\, in particular\, has many knobs one ca
n turn which can drastically impact cost\, latency\, and downtime. In this
talk they will introduce some of these knobs\, what they do\, and how to
tune them to maximize your financial and technical happiness.\n\nSPONSORED
: Thanks to NetApp for ongoing support and Spotify for hosting.\n\nAre you
a local member interested in presenting to the group? Submit your talk he

dig\, focuses on security\, intrusion detection\, and the Linux kernel wit
h Kubernetes and eBPF. As an active advocate for open source\, Nova is an
ambassador for the CNCF and the creator of kubicorn\, a successful Kuberne
tes infrastructure management tool. Nova joins Sysdig from Heptio/VMWare\,
where she was a Senior Developer Advocate. Prior to VMWare\, Nova was at
Deis/Microsoft\, where she was a developer advocate and an engineer on Kub
ernetes. Nova has a deep technical background in the Go programming langua
ge and has authored many successful open source tools in Go. Nova has orga
nized many special interest groups in Kubernetes. She is a leader in the c
ommunity. She understands the frustration with running cloud-native infras
tructure via a distributed cloud-native application and authored an O’Re
illy book on the topic\, Cloud Native Infrastructure. Nova lives in Seattl
e and spends her free time climbing mountains.\n\nDanielle Zephyr Malament
is a Site Reliability Engineer at Spotify. They have been fiddling with c
omputers since getting a Commodore 64 as a kid. Previous jobs in their 10-
ish year career include systems administration at small managed hosting co
mpanies\, starting an anonymous ISP\, and Production Engineering at Facebo
ok. They enjoy automating things so they Just Work. In their spare time\,
they are into science fiction\, linguistics\, and long conversations that
go down rabbit holes.\n\nLOCATION / INSTRUCTIONS\n\nWe’ll be hosting at
a different World Trade Center building this time\, but we all should stil
l be aware that the building takes security seriously. You’ll want to in
sure you arrive with a government issued ID\, and that your meetup profile
name matches that ID\, as that is what we’ll be sharing with the front-
desk as our attendee list.\n\nThe meetup map is a little glitchy\, so the
 actual address is:\nFOUR World Trade Center\n150 Greenwich St\n71st FLOOR\
