SUMMARY:Mary Poppendieck on Six Decades of Software Engineering
DESCRIPTION:Yet another very special guest. Mary Poppendieck has been at th
e forefront of our industry throughout her career. She was one of the firs
t practitioners to bring Lean ideas into software development\, well befor
e they were popularized by DevOps and Agile in the last couple of decades.
\n\nMary will share her experience and major themes throughout six decades
of software engineering\, from mainframes to DevOps!\n\nDon't miss this c
hance to hear from a luminary in our field!\n\nNOTE: START TIME IS 19H POR
TUGAL TIME (GMT+1)\n\nLink to Zoom (videoconference) will be visible on th
is page on the right side (under "Online event") once you are logged in an
d registered for this meetup.\n\nThe event starts at 19:00 sharp\, please
try to connect on time!\n\n=========\n\nTALK: Six Decades of Software Engi
neering\nSpeaker: Mary Poppendieck\n\nMainframes were born in the 1960’s
\, along with the earliest electronic telephone switching systems. Minicom
puters arrived in the 70’s\, and so did ARPANET. PC’s came of age the
80’s\, as well as languages that were so simple we figured anyone could
use them. This led to many a disaster – from bloated\, unmaintainable co
rporate systems to medical device failures. And so the 90’s became the d
ecade of heavy process\; but it was also the decade that open source softw
are came of age.\n\nThen along came Y2K\, which brought us the Internet co
mpanies\, Agile software development\, and the decade of teams. Try as the
y might to be autonomous\, the teams inherited monolithic databases and de
ep dependencies. To solve these problems\, the 2010’s became a decade de
voted to flow (DevOps) and architecture (microservices). Now in the 2020
’s our world has changed dramatically\, faster than anyone could have im
agined\, and we have to learn how to change our software just as fast.\n\n
From my first ‘Hello World’ in 1961\, I’ve watched software migrate
from automating business processes\, to a product in its own right\, to a
fundamental element of our infrastructure. This talk will cover some of th
e early principles behind great software engineering that are as true toda
y as they were a half-century ago\; and it will cover a few mistakes we ma
de that we do not need to repeat.\n\nMary Poppendieck has been in the Info
rmation Technology industry for over fifty years. She has managed software
development\, supply chain management\, manufacturing operations\, and ne
w product development. She spearheaded the implementation of an early Just
-in-Time production system and led new product development teams that comm
ercialized products ranging from digital controllers to 3M Light Fiber™.
\n\nA popular writer and speaker\, Poppendieck is the coauthor of four boo
ks: Lean Software Development\, 2003. Implementing Lean Software Developme
 nt\, 2006. Leading Lean Software Development\, 2009\, and Lean Mindset\, 2
013.\n\n=========\n\nRemember our guidelines of engagement in the video ca
ll\, to make sure things run as smoothly as possible:\n\n1. When you join\
, you will be muted to avoid noise\n\n2. We ask you to rename yourself to
include your name and city/location\n\n3. Turn on your webcam if you don
’t mind\, so we can recognize each other’s faces and make this more in
-person like\, we're friendly :)\n\n4. After each presentation\, there wil
l be a Q&A round\n\n5. If you have a question\, “Raise hand” to let us
know OR write it in the chat\n\n5.1. If you “raise hand”\, we will ca
ll your name and unmute you so you can ask the question\n\n5.2. If you wri
te the question in the chat\, we will read it out loud\n\n6. Feel free to
use the chat for discussions with other participants\n\n7. We will keep th
e call open for 10/15m after the talks for further discussion\, virtual ne
tworking if you like :)\n\n=========\n\nIMPORTANT NOTICE: The talks will b
e recorded and published in the DevOps Lisbon YouTube channel. By signing
up for this event you explicitly agree that your image might appear in the
video recordings. Nevertheless\, you can always get in touch with the org
anisation ([masked]) to have it removed.\n\nhttps://www.devopschat.co/meet
