SUMMARY:Moving Software to Hardware: The Start of a Journey
DESCRIPTION:**PLEASE REGISTER HERE**\nhttps://trifork.zoom.us/webinar/regis
ter/WN_5OApy9-CRlWg80pdF0p1Gw\n\nJoin us along with Daniel Wisehart\, inve
ntor of imaging electronics in CCD-based cameras successfully deployed in
NASA missions for a discussion and Q&A on moving software to hardware\, th
e why and why not\, the problems and how it's done.\n\nWhy?\n● To keep t
he CPU free to do what SW is better at and to use HW for what it is better
at.\n● To filter the data noise the SW has to deal with and provide it
only with actionable data.\n● To prioritize and sort incoming data into
separate channels.\nConfigure HW triggers to act automatically on specific
data.\n● To speed up tasks that can afford the cost of communicating be
tween SW and HW.\n● To take advantage of the massively parallel nature o
f HW.\n● To run long winded parallel process like genetic algorithm sear
 ch\n\nWhy not?\n● CPU is a dynamic\, general purpose\, fetch/fetch/execu
te/store machine.\n● HW has a set configuration of static structures.\n\
nWhat are the problems?\n● HW dev takes roughly five times longer than S
 W dev\, so Agile is difficult.\n● A synth/place/route takes one to four
hours\, so CI/CD is less helpful.\n● Simulation is available\, but data
creation and simulation are slow.\nDebugging in hardware is very limited.\
n\nHow is it done?\n● Find the people who know FPGAs and who have experi
ence with PCIe and Network designs.\n● Create an interface between HW an
d SW that works well for both teams.\n● Create test adapters for both th
e HW and SW teams that operate the other side of the interface so they may
work in parallel.\n● Identify a hardware platform--usually\, a PCIe car
d--with a suitable FPGA\, could be an AWS FPGA server.\n● Build out serv
ers to support HW development\, or rent them from AWS.\n\nMore about Danie
l:\nDaniel Wisehart is a sole inventor of imaging electronics in CCD-based
cameras successfully deployed in NASA missions:\n\n● Ultra-low noise\,
ultra-low light\, radiation-hardened electronics flew into space on an ear
th-sensing rocket called VISIONS.\n● Imaging the Mars Lander’s infrare
d range finder during daylight hours from JPL in Southern California durin
g the Lander’s sling-shot around the earth.\n● Custom image sensor for
ground testing Hubble’s Wide Field Planetary Camera no. 3 (WFPC3).\n\n*
