SUMMARY:October Virtual Meetup - Prevent Heroism
DESCRIPTION:# Prevent Heroism: How to Work Today to Reduce Work Tomorrow\n\
nReactive work is a massive time and value sink\, but unfortunately\, exis
ting gaps in team structure and/or metrics don’t capture “what’s mis
sing”. For example\, how do you track calls not placed\, outages that ne
ver occurred? Traditional structures and metrics don’t necessarily captu
re this shift\, yet everyone benefits from a better user experience - i.e.
the unplaced call or outage. In this talk I’m going to discuss:\n\n-- L
evel set: explain the concept “upstream work”\, as defined by Dan Heat
h in his book Upstream\n-- Explain why this focus is important\n-- Discuss
how teams can start to shift from reactive work to proactive work\, i.e.
move upstream\; including shifting reward structures away from Heroes\n--
Cover how to use metrics to support this shift in practice\n\n# Presenter:
Quintessence Anx\n\nQuintessence has worked in the IT community for over
 10 years\, including as a database administrator and a DevOps / Cloud / In
frastructure engineer. She was a core contributor to Stark & Wayne's SHIEL
D project\, which adds backup functionality to Cloud Foundry\, as well as
a technical reviewer for Learning Go Programming published by Packt Publis
hing. Currently\, she is a Developer Advocate for PagerDuty\, focusing on
community engagement related to DevOps. Outside of work she co-founded Inc
lusive Tech Buffalo and is a mentor to underrepresented minorities in tech
so they can launch sustainable careers in development.\n\n# Schedule\n\n6
 :00p CDT - Settle in\, chat\, start talking about the meetup\n6:10p CDT (i
 sh) - Talk begins\, Q&A afterward\, then hang out.\nWe'll likely be done w
ith the talk and the Q&A by 7:00p CDT\, if not sooner\, and folks can hang
out and chat for a bit. We probably won't take the full 2 hours.\n\nhttps
