SUMMARY:Toward the Jet Age of Machine Learning w/ Ameet Talwalkar (CMU+C&S
 Confluence)
DESCRIPTION:Ameet Talwalkar of CMU to speak.\n\n"""\nMachine learning today
bears resemblance to the field of aviation at the turn of the 20th centur
 y. The Wright Brothers' pioneering flights in 1903 led to widespread recog
nition that powered flight would revolutionize society. However\, it took
half a century of aeronautical engineering advances for the 'Jet Age' (i.e
.\, commercial aviation) to finally became a reality. Similarly\, machine
learning (ML) is currently experiencing a renaissance and there is broad r
ecognition about its potential for widespread societal impact. However\, o
nly a handful of large organizations today have the resources to develop M
L-powered applications\, both due to the computational demands and high-le
vel of required expertise. Moreover\, leading ML models are complex and op
aque\, and their lack of interpretability fundamentally limits our ability
to understand or trust their behavior. As a consequence\, we are just scr
atching the surface of the potential for ML-powered technology. In this ta
lk\, I will describe my lab's ongoing work on core ML challenges related t
o scalability\, automation\, and interpretability to help democratize ML a
nd move us toward the ‘Jet Age’ of machine learning.\n"""\n\nAmeet Tal
walkar is an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department at Car
negie Mellon University. He is also co-founder and Chief Scientist at Dete
rmined AI. His primary interest is in the field of statistical machine lea
 rning.\n\nAbout the CMU+C&S Confluence Talk Series:\n---------------------
 -----------------------------------------\nFrom AI-powered computer vision
to ultra-massive distributed systems\, the interwoven nature of the resea
 rch/practice dynamic can’t be understated.\n\nConfluence is a talk serie
s that grabs that dynamic by the horns.\n\nJointly produced by Carnegie Me
llon University’s Institute for Software Research and Code & Supply\, Co
nfluence is a free tech talk series will bring together Pittsburgh’s mos
t bleeding-edge researchers and influential front-line developers to learn
 \, inform\, guide\, and inspire one another.\n\nhttps://www.devopschat.co/
