SUMMARY:Virtual - Empathy across Remote Teams & Managing Up
DESCRIPTION:COVID-19 will keep us from gathering in person through May\, ho
wever Laura\, JJ and I are working to provide an online experience so you
can get your DevOps fix!\n\n---\n\nOur virtual host will be IBM.\n\nOur vi
rtual sponsors are IBM\, LogDNA & Contrast Security.\n\n---\n\nEmpathy acr
oss Remote Teams\n==============================\n\nThe world is a bit top
sy-turvy right now\, and those of us still fortunate enough to have jobs t
o report in at may suddenly be working remotely for the first time or work
ing with teammates who have never worked remotely before. It's a lot harde
r to socialize with teammates in a remote setting\, and empathizing with o
thers' needs is harder when we can't speak in person. Remote work itself i
s a lot like being on-call: It feels neverending and can grate on your ner
ves. Let's talk about how to create and maintain empathy on remote teams\,
from using communication frameworks to helping others learn how to empath
ize with you.\n\nSpeaker: Laura Santamaria\n\nAs LogDNA’s Developer Advo
cate\, Laura Santamaria loves to learn and explain how things work. She br
idges the gap between external developers and SREs and internal engineerin
g teams. In addition\, she is the curator for A Minute on the Mic. Apart f
rom work\, she co-hosts Austin DevOps\, taught Python for Women Who Code A
ustin for many years\, and volunteers with DevOpsDays Austin. Outside of t
ech\, Laura runs\, plays with her dogs\, throws discs\, and watches clouds
—the real kind.\n\n---\n\nManaging Up and Across\n======================
==\n\nMost of us are in the business of prevention. The trouble with that
business is that when you do your job well\, nobody knows you are doing yo
ur job.\n\nThis talk focuses on how to communicate what you are doing to y
our peers\, supervisor and production stakeholders so that the work and va
lue of your team is visible across your organization.\n\nSpeaker: Boyd Hem
phill\n\nBoyd Hemphill is a DevOps raconteur in the silicon hills of Austi
n Texas. Boyd founded and organizes the Austin DevOps Meetup. He privilege
d to serve as part of the DevOps Days Austin Organizers team. In his profe
ssional life\, Boyd has been a developer (PL/SQL\, PHP)\, DBA (Oracle and
MySQL)\, and system administrator as well as a Director and even a CTO. To
day he is the Director of Cloud Engineering for Contrast Security we we ar
e making the internet just a bit safer.\n\nhttps://www.devopschat.co/meeti
