SUMMARY:Zero Downtime in K8's AND Ensuring Data Quality In a Data Lake Envi
 ronment
DESCRIPTION:Hi Everyone\,\nIt's about that time to take a long lunch\, grab
a beverage of your choice and have a great time with 2 interactive topics
related to both DevOps and Data Engineering. We are proud to announce our
next DevOps & Drinks Virtual Meetup will be happening on Friday\, Februar
y 11th at 1 PM EST via Zoom.\n\nFirst up\, we have our old friend Dimitar
 Georgievski\, DevOps Architect\, from John Wiley & Sons\, and an all-aroun
d great guy discussing how to run Kubernetes with Zero Downtime!\n\nHe wil
l discuss:\nThe Kubernetes platform addresses old hosting concerns with el
egance by applying smart conventions and through API integrations of servi
ces that participate in automating potentially complex workflows. In the c
ase of Continuous Deployments\, avoiding downtimes for the application und
er management is the hardest requirement to implement and automate. Histor
ically\, this is the stage that teams averse to automation spend most of t
heir resources and time - manual deployments and verifications.\n\nFortuna
tely\, Kubernetes and some familiar services make deployments easy and eli
minate downtimes and human intervention. With the help of Istio\, for mana
ging routing in a Service Mesh\, Prometheus\, providing feedback on vital
performance metrics during a deployment\, and Flagger to orchestrate deplo
yments\, metrics validation\, autoscaling and rollbacks it is easy to impl
ement a zero-downtime canary deployment workflow.\n\nA live demo will demo
nstrate how these components integrate and manage canary deployments.\n\nT
hen\, we will have Paul Singman\, Developer Advocate at Treverse\, discuss
:\nEnsuring data quality in a data lake environment with lakeFS\n\nThe fir
st problem faced with big data was the feasibility of processing data at s
uch a high scale. In solving the scale problem\, people developed technolo
 gies we know today like Kafka\, Spark\, Presto\, Snowflake\, etc.\nNow the
problem people face is one of manageability. They no longer ask if they c
an handle a dataset but rather: How can I move faster when developing data
-intensive applications? How do I utilize all of my data and ensure it is
high-quality?\nIn this talk\, you will learn how lakeFS simplifies maintai
ning high-quality data lakes in two ways: 1. by providing no-copy\, isolat
ed data development environments and 2. enabling CI/CD workflows that allo
w for automated testing of data.\nlakeFS (https://lakefs.io/) is an open s
ource tool that brings Git-like operations and versioning to object storag
 e (e.g. AWS S3\, GCS\, Azure Blob)\, enabling data teams to run parallel p
ipelines for experimentation and CI/CD for data. To learn more\, join the
lakeFS slack community at https://lakefs.io/slack and talk data with other
  users\, stay up-to-date with the latest features\, and more.\n\nPaul is a
developer advocate for the lakeFS project\, after several years as a data
engineer in the analytics team at Equinox Fitness. He enjoys contextualiz
ing the latest data trends and technologies in blog posts and talks\, inst
ead of getting caught up in the hype surrounding specific tools. He's spok
en at various conferences and meetups\, including the Postgres Conference
and AWS re: Invent. When not working you can find him running\, playing go
lf\, and sleeping.\n\nAs always\, the Averity DevOps & Security team will
be there in full force answering any questions about the insane job market
we're living in\, and providing face-melting guitar shredding and taking
requests for our guests before and after the presentations. Bring some goo
d ones!\n\nLooking forward to seeing everyone on Friday 2/11/22 at 1PM EST
